The Exercise That Cuts Your Risk of Death in Half

A 30-year study just published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine tracked 147,000 adults for three decades and measured one thing: who lived, and who did not. The answer might surprise you.


In the largest and longest study of its kind, people who combined regular cardio with resistance training cut their risk of death by up to 58 percent compared to people who did neither.



What the Data Says

The study found that 90 to 120 minutes of strength training per week was associated with the lowest all-cause mortality risk. That is only 15 minutes a day!


At that dose:

  • All-cause mortality was 13% lower

  • Cardiovascular mortality was 19% lower

  • Neurological disease mortality was 27% lower


But more is not always better. The survival benefit plateaued beyond that range. Consistency was key.


Similarly, 90 to 120 minutes of cardio per week also produced strong benefits on its own.


But the people who did both had outcomes that neither group achieved alone, at only 30 minutes per day. The two types of exercise are complementary. Each does something the other cannot.



Why This Matters If You Have Read My Previous Posts

Muscle does not just make you stronger, it keeps you alive.



What I Recommend

All you need is 15 minutes per day doing very simple moves like squats, push-ups, and planks. Pair that with another 15 minutes of brisk walking at 4 mph. That's just one mile.


Start there. Increase intensity by no more than 10 percent every two weeks. Your tendons adapt far slower than your muscles, and a tendon injury means no training at all while it heals.


Your goal? Be fully functional at 80.



The Bottom Line

This study is not news to me, and it should not be news to you. Everything we know about longevity medicine points to the same prescription: build muscle, protect your heart, reduce inflammation, and preserve your hormones.


If you are not exercising, start this week. If you are, keep going. The data now spans 30 years and 147,000 lives.


The evidence does not get stronger than this.
